 1.Dispelling the Myths of Dispensing

Mark Stone, Pharmacist & Independent Prescriber, Tamar Valley Health Practice & Andrew Downing, PSUK Training Development Consultant present a workshop aimed at dispelling dispensing myths, doubts and queries that you feel are never answered fully if at all!

Mark and Andrew will run an open session based on your queries and issues, providing practical advice and information on running an efficient and viable dispensing business along the way, topics to be covered include:

  • Keeping your dispensing business sustainable and responding to ongoing pressures
  • Providing knowledge of practical changes that can be made to ensure your business receives maximum benefit
  • Highlight key risks to the dispensing business model.

Mark is the Project Pharmacist at Devon Local Pharmaceutical Committee where he has worked since 2006. Mark has worked on projects such as the Devon LPC Stock Shortage audits, Magic a MUR (MUR Training), NMS One training, and has conducted research in areas of pharmacy practice e.g. health promotion champions.

Mark co-authored the Plymouth Health Living Pilot evaluation and the Pharmacist Led Diabetes service in Plymouth evaluation (evaluations can be found on Devon LPC website).

Mark is an Independent Prescribing Pharmacist for a large GP practice in Cornwall, where he works as a clinical primary care pharmacist. He runs clinics focusing on clinical medication reviews for long term conditions and minor illnesses.

Mark has more recently been presenting for PSUK at training events across the UK on topics including EPS2 and Sustainable Dispensing.


2.Successful GP Federation

Andrew Lockhart-Mirams, Healthcare Specialist solicitor & Senior Partner at Lockhart’s Solicitors.

Andrew Lockhart-Mirams will be explaining GP Federations, the overall benefits and how to make it successful. There is a need to work together in order to address the challenges facing GP practices, and to further develop and respond effectively to emerging opportunities.

Andrew will be able to talk through step-by-step with you in how to formulate GP federations through all stages of their developments, and how the innovative business model gives GP practices level playing field in high-end contract bidding and much more.

Andrew will cover the following in his workshop presentation:

  • What is a federation?
  • Benefits of group of local GPs working together
  • Structure arrangements for federating
  • Federating challenges
  • Maximising the chance of federation success
  • Incorporation and the setting up of provider entities
  • Community Interest Companies and social enterprises

Andrew Lockhart-Mirams is Chairman of the National Association of Specialist Solicitors Advising Doctors (NASSAD). 

For more than twenty years, he acted for the 'General Practitioners Committee of the BMA' on a wide range of regulatory and contractual issues affecting GPs, including the New GMS Contract in 2004.

Andrew has a national reputation for his work in the development of PMS and APMS agreements. In addition to producing agreements for federations of practices, he has produced shareholder agreements for provider companies wishing to supply services to PCT's (historically) and currently CCGs, in response to commissioning recommendations. He has developed a detailed understanding of the implications of the Health & Social Care Bill and regularly advises on the associated strategy and policy issues.

In 2005, he was given an award at the 'Annual LMC Conference Dinner' in recognition of 21 years’ service to GPs in the UK. Andrew Lockhart-Mirams is also Chairman of the National Association of Specialist Solicitors Advising Doctors (NASSAD).
